5 weeks of using cloth and going strong!

Well, I clearly haven't been so good about keeping up with Josie's blog, mostly because she has been cranky for me and is up all night, so I have been rather sleep deprived. I just realized that I haven't written Josie her 1 month letter, so instead I will just give a brief update on how the last few weeks have gone with our cloth diapering experience.

I have developed what I think is safe to call a cloth diaper addiction. I received some prefolds and a cover from the Cloth Diaper Foundation, an organization that helps low-income families cloth diaper their children. The application process is simple, but acceptance is limited only to the first 20 applicants or so. You can check out their great organization here. They are currently closed until further notice due to some drama, but they should be opening back up (hopefully soon!) to help more families in need.

Anyway, while prefolds are more economical and easier to use, I HATE them. I don't mind having to trifold them in a cover, but Josie seems to always have the beginning stages of a rash that I think is caused by the constant wetness, and she is somewhat of a super soaker so it's hard to keep her dry all the time. I checked out the cloth diaper swap on BabyCenter and found a lot of really great used diapers for cheap. I think my luck was partly due to many of the BabyCenter cloth diaper users being "on the wagon," as they like to say. They all apparently have cloth diaper addictions and decided not to buy anything in April, so I was able to score some really great quality, adorable, fully functional, and clean diapers for very cheap! One of the brands that I was able to purchase for cheap to try on my little one was Bagshot Row Bamboo. These diapers looked huge when I got them in the mail, so I figured they wouldn't fit my scrawny chicken-legged 5 week old. Boy, was I wrong. They not only fit her with out too much bulk (there was some, obviously), but it was barely wet when I changed her almost her almost 3.5 hours later!

I was amazed! I decided to order one from Joyce, the owner of Bagshot Row bamboo, and I'm very excitedly waiting for the new one to prep and try, since it won't be used or worn at all! I figured that it doesn't hurt to have some nice looking diapers for pictures, special occasions, and other things like that, even if they are a tad pricey. I was able to use my cash assistance money to buy diapers, and instead of only getting 2 or 3 packs of disposables, I was able to get an adorable stash of diapers for a great price that should last my daughter until potty training, and these diapers also have the advantage of being able to be sold when we are done with them. I also scored some well-loved but still functional diapers on Diaper Swappers free for the cost of shipping them too me. I've also been entering some giveaways that I've found on others' blogs. I've been a resourceful cloth diapering mama, and thanks to some kind people giving stuff away and the CDF, we now have a great stash for our little munchkin!

The next thing I would like to figure out is how people are able to do reviews and get diapers to test out. I would LOVE to test some cloth diapers on Josie and write reviews on them. Maybe in time... Right now, I'm looking into becoming a cloth diaper consultant for Everything Birth. More info can be found here. If you'd be interested in letting me do a cloth diaper party for you, let me know :-)

I will update with some pictures of Josie rockin' the cloth when I get around to taking some! And after her doctor's appointment this week, we'll have more updates with how she's grown!
